Yoga & Creativity: Building a Practice as a Writer or Artist
A workshop with Nick Krieger and Tim Floreen
Saturday, February 4, 2012, 1:00-3:30 PM
Flying Yoga Shala
4308 Telegraph Ave., Oakland (map)

Expressing ourselves artistically can be one of the most fulfilling things we do, and it can also be one of the hardest. Whether we love to write, sketch, paint or tweet, we all struggle with the same obstacles: a busy schedule, self-criticism, fear. In this workshop, through movement, meditation, writing/sketching exercises, and group discussion, we’ll explore how yogic practices and concepts like non-attachment, truthfulness, and ritual can help us overcome barriers to expression and enrich what we create.

It’ll be a fun afternoon of breathing, sweating, and coloring outside the lines, and it'll also serve as a starting point for you to build your own practice combining art or writing with yoga. If you’re still waiting for a muse to appear or inspiration to call your cell, perhaps it’s time for some vinyasa to get your pencil moving.

The workshop is open to writers and visual artists of any stripe, and yoga practitioners of all levels are welcome, just as long as you aren't brand new to yoga. Bring a yoga mat, a notebook or sketchpad, your favorite writing or drawing implement, and something comfy to sit on.

About Nick Krieger: Nick discovered the practice of writing in 2002 when a teacher said, “If you want to be a writer, it’s simple… Writers write.” His essays have earned several travel-writing awards, and he recently released his first book, the memoir Nina Here Nor There: My Journey Beyond Gender, which happens to contain a scene that takes place in frog pose. By tag teaming his yoga practice with his writing ritual, he’s found that together they complement, serve, and ignite each other. He holds an MFA from the University of San Francisco and completed a 200-hour vinyasa teacher training with Janet Stone.
